Augustine of Hippo´s masterpiece The City of God is one of the greatest books ever written, yet its size - nearly 1,000 pages - too often intimidates even serious readers. Composed in the years after the sack of Rome in the fifth century, it ushers you on an astounding historical and theological journey through the final years of the ancient world. What made this book so powerful? What mysteries lie within it? What relevance does the 1,600-year-old text have for our world today? And how should contemporary readers approach this monumental text? Now is your chance to answer these questions and more with this profound survey of one of the world´s truly great books. Over the course of 24 in-depth lectures, Professor Mathewes guides you chapter by chapter through Augustine´s magnum opus, introducing you not only to the book´s key arguments but also to the historical context necessary to comprehend The City of God´s true power. Here, you´ll discover that Augustine was a surprisingly modern man with a clear-eyed outlook on a world in transition - and whose ideas continue to influence us today. Witness how he wrestled with some of the thorniest philosophical challenges of any time, including the problem of evil, faith versus reason, fate versus free will, and the very nature of God. Although there are no easy answers, Augustine´s approach is ultimately therapeutic, helping readers live ´´happy in hope´´, which, he argues, is the only true happiness in a fallen world. Whether you come to this book as a Christian, a philosopher, a historian, a literature lover, or simply someone who wants fresh insight into our world today, Augustine will revolutionize the way you think about politics, religion, history, and our relationship to the divine. Professor Mathewes delivers a magnificent introduction to one of the world´s truly great books. PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be ava 1. A Macat Analysis of Augustine´s Confessions , H...

Originally written as 13 individual books around 397 CE, Augustine of Hippo´s Confessions is one of the most referenced works in the Western literary tradition. Augustine lived from 354-430 CE, and the work is in part an autobiography. But it also tells us much about the period in which he lived. The first nine books draw a compelling narrative of the first 43 years of Augustine´s life, which were spent in North Africa and Italy. In the 10th book, Augustine uses these experiences as a meditation on the nature of memory. Finally, he ranges more widely, using the last three books to comment on the Bible´s book of Genesis. It is a measure of his immense intellectual range that he can switch from the personal to the philosophical and finally to the contemplative in this great work. Augustine´s title expresses something of the double meaning of the work itself. In a seminal article from 1957, Joseph Ratzinger (eventually Pope Benedict XVI) showed that the title functions to express the work both as a ´´confession´´ of past sins and as a ´´confession´´ of praise for God. Confessions is an intricate work of literature, long recognized for its poetic prose and penetrating psychological insight into the trials and satisfactions to be found in the act of confession. Augustine´s work has stood the test of time and continues to be taught and read/listened to all over the world. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Macat.com. The Hippopotamus Defence (eBook, ePUB)

The Hippopotamus Defence is just what a club player needs. It´s a straightforward and clear-cut chess opening that avoids the ever growing body of mainline theory. It´s universal: Black can use the Hippo against virtually all of White´s choices (1.e4, 1.d4, 1.c4, 1.f4, the Colle, London, Trompowsky, Réti and others). It´s not very well known and will surprise many opponents. On top of all that, the Hippo is seriously underestimated: with its characteristic double fianchetto it may look quiet, but inside there lurks a very dangerous animal. FIDE Master Alessio de Santis is one of the world´s greatest experts on the Hippo and has written a practical, well-structured and accessible manual. His book can be studied on three levels: after a first flash of 3 to 4 hours you will be familiar with the Hippo´s basic moves and key variations, its strategic themes and recurring manoeuvres. In the second and third stage De Santis leads you through the most important concrete lines and introduces the Semi-Hippopotamus to counter some specific White ideas. You can use the Hippo as a surprise weapon or as your main repertoire. The extensive explanations and clear conclusions make this book an easy-to-navigate manual for all club players. If you like to confront your opponents with some unexpected counter-attacks, then you need not look any further.
